
BASIC FUNCTION:
The Youth/Teen Educator under the direction of the Program Manager and Executive Director is responsible for facilitating weekly adolescent education for At-Promise young people by coordinating, organizing, and planning programs and social activities targeted toward their personal, educational, behavioral, developmental, psychological, and emotional growth. The Youth/Teen educator must utilize appropriate personal experiences, support, and adolescent development knowledge for program delivery. In the classroom, youth educator is responsible for supporting the group facilitators in the success of their role by maintain ongoing communication and planning. Assist in the weekly developing of lesson plans and group activities. We are looking for someone self-motivated and caring willing to work within a non-hierarchical learning paradigm. The Youth/Teen Educator strengthens the community by developing satisfactory professional relationships with staff, volunteers, collaborating agencies, parents and children.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for coordinating all activities relating to the operation of young people education in Padres Unidos At-Promise Youth Family Strengthening Educational Modules.
- Reviews and plans weekly appropriate topics and strategies with the team and supervisor.
- Commits to following the Padres Unidos Group Standards Philosophy and Principles of Practice, including encouraging and supporting youth leadership and shared leadership.
- Reports child abuse as mandated by state law.
- Sends within 5 minutes of starting and ending an assignment a cell phone text message to administration for personnel present in the room.
- Provides referrals and assistance to appropriate community resources.
- Responsible for the safety and well being of all young people, parents and children in the classroom.
- Must be prepared and knowledgeable of the presenting topic for Youth/Teen classes.
- Timely submits material requests forms for copies or class materials.
- Coordinates and turns in to the site coordinator the collection of the participant attendance records.
- Provides support to young people prior to and following each class session.
- Attends weekly Youth/Teen class preparation trainings for program cohesiveness and to enhance skills in order to provide quality adolescent education instruction.
- At request, attend group debriefings with the Group Facilitator, children and youth group workers to share and discuss progress/issues relating to families attending the classes.
- Makes sure that the teen room is safe and ready 10 minutes prior to the start of class (curriculum prep, snack and coffee prep, etc.).
- Cleans up after class, leaving classroom in same condition given.
- Youth/Teen Educator will inform and provide documentation to the assigned Site Coordinator when issues in the Youth/Teen Education component arise.
- Must be available and respond within 12 hours of original request for weekly in-between class correspondence via phone or e-mail for the purpose of consult, debriefing, class preparation etc.
- Contacts the assigned supervisor immediately and no later than the next business day with any suspected child abuse concerns.
- Submits any collected data (ie. class attendance and evaluation forms) to assigned personnel at end of business day.
- Communicates need for arrangement of coverage due to [1] illness, prior to the group meeting or [2] in case of a documented emergency, as soon as possible.
- Contacts the supervisor in writing their intention of leaving the position at least 30 days in advance.
- Complies and follows up site operation parking rules and regulations.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
EDUCATION
Option 1.
- A combination of:
- A completion certification of a Padres Unidos/Healthy Tomorrows parenting program and
- A one year volunteer training program (can be substituted by 5 years or more of a community work supervised experience),
- and a Community Worker paraprofessional two-year program award (can be current enrollment).
Option 2.
- A combination of:
- A completion certification of a Padres Unidos/Healthy Tomorrows parenting program and,
- A combination of a one year volunteer training and one year of supervised volunteer work in the community,
- and a Baccalaureate in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology or related fields.
EXPERIENCE
The Youth/Teen Educator is recruited from local areas to ensure that Padres Unidos classes reflect the values, culture, language and strengths of the families served in our community. In addition, knowledge about child abuse, juvenile delinquency, group dynamics, family systems, child development and local resources required. Bilingual/bicultural required with fluency in Spanish. English fluency, if candidate is not an English speaker to maintain employment must provide every month a minimum of four records of completed lessons from www.usalearns.org or get approval for an alternative action plan to learn English and provide proof of completion. Strength in Team work and sound judgment required.
